The contest asked fifth-graders to write an essay or design a PowerPoint presentation on one of Connecticut’s most important historical events or inventions. Fourth-graders were also asked to submit posters on how to be a good citizen. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill then selected winners from each of Connecticut’s five Congressional districts.
“I am very impressed with these students and the grasp they have on Connecticut’s history,” Merrill said in a press release. “They also seem to understand that they too can one day play an important part in history, or create some fantastic invention that can save or improve lives all over the world.”
Stratfield Elementary School fifth-grader Owen Kenny took second prize in the Fourth District in the essay contest. Burr Elementary School fifth-grader Brendan McMahon also won third place in the PowerPoint competition. Both decided to do their projects on Connecticut’s history with the submarine.
In the poster competition, Mill Hill Elementary School student Anastasia Mardovina was a third-place winner. Her citizenship poster featured examples of how good citizenship is happening in Fairfield.
The three winners were recognized before the Board of Selectmen meeting Wednesday afternoon. They also won a trip to Hartford to meet Merrill in her office earlier this month.
