Before they took off to shadow town employees for a few hours, First Selectman Michael Tetreau reminded them about some important strides women have made in recent weeks. For example, Hillary Clinton is on her way to being the first woman nominated to run for president, he said.
“Hillary Clinton is one step away from being the most powerful person on the face of the earth,” he said.
He also applauded the four-in-a-row national titles won by the University of Connecticut’s women’s basketball team.
“It’s another example of women setting records,” he said. “It’s a great future ahead.”
The girls got a taste for what their futures would be like if they choose to work in government throughout the day.
Employees lined up to take small groups of girls to animal control, the Fairfield Museum and History Center, the fire and police departments, the first selectman’s office, the health department, libraries, probate court and more.
They gathered for lunch at the Jacky Durrell Pavilion at Penfield Beach and took tours led by fire, police and conservation officials in the afternoon. Each girl shared a few fun facts about what she learned at the end of the day before heading home.
