FAIRFIELD, Conn. The planned renovations at Riverfield and Osborn Hill elementary schools inched forward Tuesday when Riverfields building committee got approval for its start-up costs and Osborn Hills group got its official mission.
The Board of Selectmen approved spending $250,000 on the Riverfield project for architectural drawings, hazardous material testing and other early-stage work Tuesday. Building Committee Chair Tom Quinn said the figure was based on the price of the same work for the expansions of Stratfield School and Fairfield Woods Middle School.
The approval is an early step toward the towns plan to add five new classrooms to the school. The new wing would replace the portable classrooms that have sat outside the school since 1995.
The selectmen also signed off on a charge for an Osborn Hill Window Building Committee. The group, which does not yet have any members, would oversee Fairfields plan to replace the elementary schools old windows. The schools windows have not been replaced since the buildings construction in 1958 and expansion in 1969.
The same committee could also handle a similar project at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. But because the Ludlowe project is still waiting for test results for potentially toxic chemicals in the window lining, the group will focus on Osborn Hill for now to keep the project on track for the summer of 2013.
Both decisions will also need the approval of the Representative Town Meeting to become official. The RTM will vote on the projects at its May meeting.
