Fitzgerald had coached basketball in Fairfield and worked as a teacher in the Alternative High School. Several parents and students have expressed interest in renaming the school after him.

Renaming the school would help to give the students and teacher a sense of identity, wrote AHS teacher Peter Holskin to the Board of Education.

"Walter's family and I feel both humbled and honored at this thought," Margaret Mary Fitzgerald said in a letter.

The board will have to vote on the proposal. At its meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10, it will hear the proposal made by Holskin.
