FAIRFIELD, Conn. Cole Markham can now call himself Fairfields top chess player. The Burr Elementary School student won the individual title at the Fairfield Scholastic Chess Championships last week. He also propelled Burrs group to the team championship.
The cream of the best chess players in Fairfield came together on neutral ground and played together, said Tournament Administrator Bruce Swan. Congratulations to the tournament winners; they are very strong competitors that are entitled to enjoy the bragging rights that come with being number one.
The tournament was open to elementary school students who attend Fairfield schools or are Fairfield residents. Burr Elementary, Jennings Elementary, Mill Hill School, Riverfield Elementary, Sherman Elementary, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, Ezra Academy, Greens Farm Academy, Meadow Brook Elementary and Unquowa School all sent competitors.
Proceeds from the tournament went toward Team Brent, a fundraiser for the St. Baldricks Foundation each year in Fairfield. The annual event at Tomlinson Middle School was started in honor of Brent McCreesh, a cancer survivor who was just 3 years old at the time of his diagnosis in 2005.
McCreesh was the second place individual finisher in the competition. Christopher Brennan and Eric Stein finished third and fourth, respectively. Riverfield came in second in the team competition, followed by St. Thomas in third.
Mathnasium of Fairfield hosted the competition as a neutral site at its Post Road location. We are pleased to see such a high level and we are proud to be associated and to support local chess, said Mathnasium Director David Lubner.
