The house was originally commissioned by Mrs. Hugh D. Auchincloss, Kennedy's maternal grandmother, and designed in the Newport Georgian style by architect Roger Bullard in 1927.
“[Kennedy Jr.] was taken with the old-world majesty and quiet life it might provide him after a life of constant colliding with the world’s media,” Cathy Griffin, a real estate reporter for Movoto, wrote in a recent article. “When he was in the neighborhood, he and Carolyn would drive around the property and nose around about the possibility of it hitting the market.”
He heard from his mom, Jacqueline Kennedy, about her summer stopovers there on her way to another home in Rhode Island owned by her stepfather, Hugh Auchincloss.
The 10,000-square-foot house, which was finished in 1929, has 12 rooms, eight of which are bedrooms, and boasts nine fireplaces and six full bathrooms. The price tag on the mansion now is $7.75 million.
Real estate agent Michelle Genovesi of Michelle and Company says that attached to the master bedroom are two bathrooms, a private sitting room and a working fireplace.
She says the kitchen has been renovated into a chef’s paradise with two dishwashers, two sub-zero refrigerators, four ovens and a six-burner gas range.
The property also comes with a view of Long Island Sound, Southport Harbor, a golf course, a guesthouse, pool and tennis court.
