Both Donovan and Bernaschina said they are engaged in education and have been advocates for students in the Fairfield Public Schools for many years.
As community and education leaders, they say they are committed to bringing Fairfield’s educational system forward by enabling a stronger dialogue with the public to share information and build support for initiatives, demanding fiscal responsibility that prioritizes use of funds to support student programs and teaching, and fostering a positive and supportive learning environment for each student.
Donovan, a school volunteer, said she has worked toward bringing positive change to the school district. Beginning as a member of the Mill Hill Elementary School PTA where she served in a variety of capacities, she moved to the PTA Council for its broader view of the district. In her current role as vice-president of curriculum on the PTA Council, Donovan has been engaged in learning and sharing information with parents and PTAs on the many new learning standards, state assessments and mandates.
Donavan serves in all curriculum review groups, most recently as the Fairfield PTA representative for a state focus group on new science standards, and also created a legislative update seminar for parents on education issues. She is also working with the Fairfield Museum and the PTA to increase participation in curriculum supportive exhibits by our schools.
Bernaschina brings a long history of volunteerism to benefit children in the Fairfield Public Schools and in the community. She has been active in scores of school organizations, chairing and volunteering in more than two dozen PTA committees, including three consecutive years as PTSA president at Roger Ludlowe Middle School. Bernsachina has also held leadership positions within the Fairfield Ludlowe High School PTA.
She has also been a champion for academic excellence serving on the math curriculum and textbook committee (grades 6 through geometry), the language arts curriculum committee (grades 6 through 12) and the middle school principal selection committee.
