The House of Representatives voted on Thursday, April 10, to improve the state’s response to sexual violence at all of Connecticut's colleges and universities.

The proposal was approved unanimously in the House of Representatives. House Bill 5029 "expands sexual assault policies at all college campuses in Connecticut by requiring colleges to immediately provide victims of sexual assault with supportive information regarding their rights and options, and allowing any victims of sexual assault to report the crime anonymously," according to a press release.

The legislation would also require colleges to establish "sexual response teams and partner with local sexual assault service providers to enhance the level of care given to victims," according to the release.

Kupchick, who represents Fairfield with its two universities, voted in favor for the legislation saying the bill addresses sexual assault on college campuses on several different levels.

“It’s important for every student who has become a victim of sexual violence to have the resources and proper support system they need,” said Kupchick. “ I was deeply disturbed when I listened to the public testimony from UConn students how they were treated by the University when they reported their sexual assault said Rep.Brenda Kupchick. This legislation embodies the appropriate steps to ensure our universities and colleges create a strict protocol for any student who is sexually assaulted.”
