State Sen. Tony Hwang and state Rep. Jonathan Steinberg of Westport were among the lawmakers and advocates who joined with Greenfield. The legislators said the public has a fundamental right to know what is in its food so it can make informed choices about what it feeds their families. They said this legislation would provide that transparency and provide parents with the opportunity to better protect their children.

Greenfield has been a lead advocate in efforts to win mandatory labeling of GMOs in his home state of Vermont. The bill, House Bill 5300, awaits a vote by the General Assembly’s Children’s Committee. Hwang, a Republican, represents Easton, Fairfield, Newtown, Weston and Westport. Steinberg, a Democrat, represents Westport.
