The legislature's Public Safety and Security Committee voted March 11 to repeal Keno, he said.
Hwang said he has been working to repeal Keno ever since it was adopted by Gov. Dannel Malloy and the legislative majority without any public input last year as part of the state budget.
Keno was expected to generate about $3.8 million in revenue this year and another $27 million in the following year, Hwang said. Those numbers have since been lowered by budget analysts to $13.5 million over two years, he said.
“This was an ill-conceived and misguided venture to expand gambling that could adversely impact our community’s quality of life. Let’s hope this repeal bill gets swift passage in the House of Representatives and state Senate,” said Hwang.
“While we have won a small battle on the expansion of gambling in Connecticut we must stay vigilant of other proposals being proposed which would permit slots and video gambling at the off-track betting centers in Bridgeport, New Haven and Windsor Locks."
