Fairfield’s top elected post, first selectman, will not be up to a vote this year, as First Selectman Michael Tetreau and the other selectmen are in the second year of four-year terms. But the town will see contested races for other major town boards this fall.
Three of the nine seats on the Board of Finance are up for a vote in November, along with four of the five spots on the Board of Education and the entirety of the town’s legislature, the Representative Town Meeting.
How many spots on the RTM will go to a vote is still under debate. The RTM voted along party lines on a Republican-sponsored redistricting plan that called for eight districts with five representatives each. Democrats favored keeping the current model, which had 10 districts. A court case on the matter began Tuesday in Bridgeport, but as of the end of the day had not been settled.
Four permanent seats and three alternates on the Town Plan and Zoning Commission, two seats and three alternates on the Zoning Board of Appeals, three spots on the Board of Assessment Appeals and both Registrars of Voters are also due for a vote in November.
The Democratic Town Committee will select its candidates Thursday, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Mckinley Elementary School, 60 Thompson St. Only DTC members may vote on the endorsements at the meeting.
The Republican Party will hold its nomination caucus on July 23, at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. All registered Republicans are eligible to vote in the caucus from 4 to 8 p.m.
The Republicans have two contested races for their party’s nominations next week. Robert Bellitto, Jr., Mary LeClerc, David Becker and Brendan Miles will compete for two nominations for the Finance Board. Pamela Iacono, Dorene Herron, Eileen Liu-McCormack and John Llewellyn are up for the party’s two nominations for the school board.
"I hope that all Republicans will do their research on the candidates and take a couple minutes to stop by Fairfield Ludlowe High School on July 23 and cast a ballot for their choices" RTC Chairman James Millington said in a news release.
