To the editor:
Cristin McCarthy Vahey has earned re-election as state representative through her courage, passion, and independence at a time of distressingly partisan politics at the local and national level.
I met Cristin when we served together on Fairfield's Representative Town Meeting, first as the majority party, then with only 12 out of 50 seats.
No matter the political balance, she worked across the aisle, supporting positions that strengthened our schools, preserved our infrastructure and protected our seniors. She earned the respect of members of both parties, evidenced by the wide margin with which she later won election to our Board of Selectmen.
Moving to the State’s General Assembly, her talent and value were recognized by appointment in her freshman term to the Education, Transportation and Appropriations Committees as well the permanent Commission on Economic Competitiveness.
Helping people is in Cristin’s heart. Long before she entered public service, while raising three young children, she worked by choice both professionally and as a volunteer to help disadvantaged families, and to reduce the incidence of substance abuse and suicide among our youth – issues more present in our lovely town than many people realize.
With degrees in economics and social work, she has a rare and valuable combination of compassion and training. She listens well, and works creatively to achieve realistic solutions. She is motivated not by a party or personal agenda, but by a deeply held, sincere belief in making our world a better place.
Cristin is unfailingly civil. She proves tough conversations do not have to be ill-natured and divisive, a rare and sorely needed gift today. We need her voice, her strength, her skill in Hartford. Please join me in supporting Cristin McCarthy Vahey’s re-election as state representative.
