This is not the first terrible consequence of gun violence in our state or our country, Democratic Town Committee Chair Ellery Plotkin said in a news release, but it is the one that is driving people to think and speak out on the issue.
The DTC at its meeting Monday night passed a resolution supporting federal action to end gun violence. The committee will send a letter with its resolution to Connecticuts representatives in Congress, Vice President Joe Biden and Gov. Dannel Malloy.
We support federal funding of mental health studies to determine what might be done to reduce gun deaths, but new federal firearms laws should be enacted without waiting for the results of such studies, the resolution states.
The Democrats letter calls for stricter federal gun laws, including an updated, comprehensive ban on assault weapons with no expiration date. It also asks for an end to the gun show loophole for firearms registration, a limit on the size of magazines and regulation of ammunition sales, including a federal database of all sales.
This resolution shows the Fairfield DTC cares, said Representative Town Meeting member Ann Stamler. It speaks to Newtown and our country, and I am honored to support it.
