Ex-Mayor In CT Under Fire For Facebook Post During State Of The Union

Tim Stewart, the former New Britain mayor and current president of the Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce, is in hot water after making an inappropriate comment on social media during Tuesday’s State of the Union.

During President Donald Trump’s address, Stewart made a sexist comment on a Facebook photo of female Democratic congresswomen who were in attendance at the speech wearing white “as a show of solidarity” in a tribute to women’s suffrage.

In a comment under the photo, Stewart posted, “(expletive) in heat,” and the outcry against him has been swift and severe. He was immediately placed on administrative leave and his “misogynistic” words have drawn the ire of other area officials. It was not immediately clear if Stewart will face any other discipline.

New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart, who is also Tim Stewart’s daughter, took to Twitter to address the issue early on Wednesday.

“To all those asking; I’m embarrassed and mortified,” she wrote.

Democratic Party Chair Nancy Wyman also released her own statement, saying that “this isn't about Republicans or Democrats. This is about basic decency. No one should speak about any woman that way, ever."

On Wednesday, Gennaro Bizarro, the Chairman of the Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce, said he will confer with other Board members and review their bylaws to determine what disciplinary authority they possess.

Bizarro said they would be doing that “immediately,” and that there will be a special meeting of the Chamber board where they will determine what Stewart’s future is with the Chamber.

"I could not be more disappointed in the social media post made last night by Tim Stewart,” he said. "His choice of words was inexcusable and has no place in modern civil discourse. Tim’s words obviously do not reflect the feelings held by the members of the Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce, our staff or myself.”
