FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfields Democrats chose Sue Brand as their candidate for the 132nd Districts seat in the Connecticut House of Representatives over Kevin Coyner.
Brand said she was relieved and "very, very thankful," after learning the news Tuesday. She thanked her family and her supporters for their help during the race.
"I really do appreciate the faith that people have in me," Brand said after the polls closed Tuesday. "When somebody gives you their vote, that's a leap of faith."
Brand, a member of Fairfields Board of Education, won the Democratic Town Committees endorsement in the race in May. But Coyner lost by only one vote at the convention, and pushed for a primary. In the end, Fairfield voters chose Brand by a 696 to 302 margin.
Both candidates touted their experience during the lead-up to the primary. Brand emphasized her 20 years in Fairfield and her five years as one of its elected officials. Coyner stressed his mix of public and private sector work as a Wall Street trader, U.S. Senate aide and now firefighter.
Most 132nd District voters, however, said they went with the candidates whom they knew best.
Its nice to meet them personally, rather than getting a bunch of junk mail from them, said Donald Sebestyan. Its nice to be more personal with them and see where they stand on some of the issues.
Brand will face one-term Republican incumbent Brenda Kupchick in November. Kupchick took the seat by a narrow margin in her first attempt, but the district has since been redrawn.
