“I’m praying for the victims, their loved ones, and the entire Lafayette community as they begin to try to understand and cope with the realities of last night’s tragic shooting,” said U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.). “Another community has been changed forever. More mothers, more fathers, more brothers and sisters, friends, and loved ones must now bear the grueling pain and grief of gun violence. We’re going to figure out what went wrong and how this happened, and I’m committed to taking every necessary step to prevent this from happening again; I hope Congress is ready to join me.”
U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty (Conn- 5th District) said of the shootings, “My heart breaks for the victims’ loved ones and for our nation each time innocent lives are taken at the hand of vicious gun violence. Our children, our servicemen and women, our faith community, our citizens should not be forced to live in fear in their own communities. There’s more that can be done and we must do more to protect innocent Americans from gun violence. It’s time for congressional leaders to wake up to the fact that we have a serious problem with gun violence in this country – it’s time to take action.”
U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) issued the following statement: “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and to the community of Lafayette. Once again the scourge of gun violence has claimed the lives of innocent Americans in a place where they have every right to feel safe. This chilling crime is yet another reminder that gun violence can strike anywhere, at any time. When will Congress act to reduce gun violence?”
