FAIRFIELD, Conn. A Bridgeport woman was charged with attempting to steal large quantities of gum from a Fairfield supermarket Thursday.
Store security at Super Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue told police they witnessed a woman load 20 multi-pack containers of chewing gum into a basket. The suspect then walked out without paying for the merchandise, police said. The total value of the theft was estimated at $80.
Stop & Shop employees stopped Rosaline Gaffey, 33, of Bridgeport, outside the store, and brought her in to wait for police, according to police reports. During her arrest, officers also found she had a warrant for her arrest from New Britain police for missing a court date. She was charged with theft, forgery and drug possession last October in New Britain, according to state judicial records.
Gaffey was charged with sixth-degree larceny, a misdemeanor, for the Fairfield incident. She was held on a $500 bond for that charge, and is due in court Aug. 14. For the New Britain incident, she was charged with first-degree failure to appear, a felony. Her bond in that case was set at $10,000, and she is due in New Britain court Aug. 23.
