Karina Ortega of Bridgeport was arrested on Wednesday, March 27, after the victim came to Bridgeport Police headquarters to report a stolen check, said Westport Police Lt. Jillian Cabana.

The victim reported one of her employees, Ortega, stole one of her business checks, forged her signature and then gave it to a third party to settle an outstanding debt, Cabana said.

The investigating officer learned Ortega gave the check to her landlord, but the landlord became suspicious because the check was made out to “cash” in the amount of $2,800, instead of to him by name, she added.

He did not attempt to cash the fraudulent check.

After an arrest warrant was granted, Westport Police learned that Milford Police had arrested Ortega and that she was being on an outstanding warrant.

She was transported to Westport Police headquarters where she was charged with attempt to commit larceny and forgery. She was released after post $5,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on April 8.
