Zekhi Eric Lee, of Waterbury, was arrested Saturday and charged with failure to bring a motor vehicle to a stop resulting in death or serious injury, reckless driving, and numerous other charges in connection with the death of Justin Quiroz, said Trooper Kelly Grant.
The chase, crash, and death occurred around 3:45 p.m. Nov. 21 when Waterbury police officers, driving an unmarked vehicle, attempted to stop Lee's Acura in connection with a criminal investigation involving drug sales in the area, state police said.
Lee refused to stop his vehicle and clipped the edge of another unmarked police car with two officers before taking off at a high rate of speed and crashing into Toyota Corolla at the intersection of South Main and East Liberty streets, Grant said.
After the collision, Lee swerved onto the side of the roadway where four pedestrians were on the sidewalk and crashed into all four, before slamming into a light pole and knocking it down. Immediately after crashing, Lee fled on foot before being captured by Waterbury police officers, state police said.
At the scene following the crash, officers found the three-year-old dead, along with three others, including a 1-year-old who were all seriously injured.
The man driving the Corolla was also injured.
Lee is being held on $100,000 bond.
