Suspect Charged With Check Forgery In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A New Haven man was arrested on a warrant Friday on charges of cashing a forged check at a Fairfield bank to steal more than $2,300 from North Castle, N.Y., last year, police say.

Earlier this year, the North Castle municipal government found that a $175 check it had issued last July to a Brookfield auto detailing shop appeared to have been stolen, according to police reports. The Brookfield company told investigators they had not received the check but said some of its mail was stolen around the same time.

Bank records showed that the check was cashed at the Wells Fargo bank on Black Rock Turnpike in August, police say. The check had been altered to pay out in the amount of $2,389 to Roger W. Card, according to police reports. Police believe Card, 38, of New Haven, cashed the check himself.

He has been in police custody since November, and since then he has pleaded guilty to theft and forgery charges in New Britain, Woodbridge, Southbury, Plymouth, Torrington, New Milford, Southington and Milford, according to Connecticut Judicial System records. Fairfield Police served his arrest warrant in Bridgeport Superior Court on Friday in this incident.

Card was charged with third-degree forgery and third-degree larceny. He was arraigned Friday and held on $15,000 bond.
