FAIRFIELD, Conn. A Bridgeport man was charged with larceny after police said he stole bicycles from the Fairfield train station earlier this summer. Police said they identified the suspect from video released by the local media in July.
A commuter reported the theft of a bicycle from the north side of the downtown train station on June 28. The bike was left locked at a rack just before 6 a.m., but when the owner returned he found the lock pried open and the bike missing. It was described as a 24-speed black road bike with neon green striping.
A second theft was reported at the station on July 9. This time a 27-inch green Cyprus bike was taken. Both bikes were valued at $500.
The July theft was captured on the stations security cameras, and the video was released by the local media. Concerned citizens contacted the Fairfield Police and identified the suspect as Bobby Blakely, 42, of Bridgeport, according to the police reports.
Fairfield Police detectives posted surveillance near Blakelys residence, and witnessed him riding a black bike with neon green striping, police said. Bridgeport Police also contacted Fairfield, saying that Blakely was arrested for similar thefts in their city in previous years. Connecticut judicial records show that Blakeley had been convicted of misdemeanor larceny charges in 2009.
Blakely was arrested on a warrant Wednesday and charged with sixth-degree larceny, a misdemeanor. He was held in lieu of a $5,000 bond and appeared in court Wednesday.
