The man's Nissan Sentra crossed from the center lane of the southbound side of the highway into the entrance ramp to the rest stop between exits 21 and 22 Wednesday night and struck the back of a tractor-trailer parked along the ramp, according to the accident report. An SUV then hit the back of the sedan, pushing the car underneath the trailer, state police say.
The truck had been illegally parked in front of a clearly marked sign, according to state police reports. The truck’s driver told investigators he had parked in order to sleep in his cab, police say. No charges had been filed against the truck driver as of Thursday.
The driver of the Sentra, Joseph Pierson of Stamford, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The truck was marked as carrying flammable liquids, but Fairfield Fire Department crews checked the area and found no leaks or signs of fire, Assistant Chief Scott Bisson said in a statement. The accident was still under investigation by Connecticut State Police.
It was the second fatal accident at Fairfield’s rest stops on I-95 this month. A North Carolina man died when his truck was hit by a car while it was parked at the rest stop Dec. 2.
