A manager at the grocery store called police as she and several employees were running through the parking lot after a woman, who attempted to steal $357.99 in groceries, police said.
The woman fled the parking lot and got into a white four-door car across the street at the McDonald's, police said.
Later, officers learned that the manager had watched the woman place different kinds of meats into a reusable bag and then pay for only $10 in items before leaving the store, police said.
When the manager approached the woman in the parking lot and asked her to go back into the store to pay for the remainder of the groceries, the woman attempted to leave, police said. But her her purse strap got stuck on the shopping cart, pulling it over and spilling the groceries, police said.
The purse was left behind as the woman fled, police said. Officers checked an expired driver's license in the purse and identified the woman as 49-year-old Verna Annicelli of Bridgeport.
Police arrested Annicelli at headquarters Wednesday and charged with criminal attempt at sixth-degree larceny. She was released on a written promise to appear in court on June 27.
