Police Track Down Suspect After Southport Residents Interrupt Home Burglary

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A Shelton man was arrested after residents interrupted a burglary in progress in their Southport home on Friday afternoon, Fairfield police said.

At 2:15 p.m. Friday, the residents of a home on Kings Drive in Southport returned home, noticed damage to their door and saw a burglar inside their house, police said. They immediately dialed 911, Fairfield police said.

A large contingent of officers responded to the area, and the residents provided prompt, specific and accurate information about the suspect, police said.

The described the burglar, the type of vehicle he was driving along with its registration plate, and the direction he fled in, police said.

Within minutes, Officer Pauciello located the fleeing vehicle, a red 1996 Chevy S-10 pickup, traveling south on I-95 near the Westport town line, police said.

He stopped the car and took the subject into custody without incident, police said.

Jorge Valdes, 51, of Shelton, was arrested and charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree larceny and possession of burglary tools. He was being held at the Fairfield Police Department lockup on $100,000 bond.

Valdes has an extensive criminal history, police said. He was convicted of burglary and larceny in Milford in December 2012. He was sentenced to five years in prison, suspended after three years, in that case, police said.

Police credit the three residents, who provided fast and accurate information, for the prompt arrest in this case.

Detectives are investigating for possible links to other crimes in the area.
