FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Wallingford resident was accused of fleeing the scene of an accident in Fairfield on Thursday, leaving a passenger trapped inside the vehicle, police said.
The one-car accident occurred near the off-ramp for Interstate 95 on Bronson Road at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, police said. The driver drove off Exit 20 and continued across Bronson Road, hitting a mound of dirt across the street, according to police reports. The car then went airborne and flew about 60 feet before striking a tree, police say.
Connecticut State Police reported seeing the same car driving more than 100 mph in the center breakdown lane of the southbound side of Interstate 95, according to police reports.
After the collision the driver fled on foot, police say. He was later found hiding under a deck in the back yard of a Bronson Road home, police said. The passenger was trapped inside the car at the time and was later extricated by the Fairfield Fire Department, police said. He was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver, a 23-year-old Wallingford resident, was charged with evading responsibility, reckless driving and interfering with police. He was released after posting $100 bond, and is due in court June 18.
