The woman's roommate called Fairfield police to report the incident. The woman suffered bruises and had difficulty breathing, police said. An ambulance was called, but she refused transport to the hospital, police said.

She gave a sworn written statement to officers, saying that her boyfriend, Thomas Rattigan, 50, of Fairfield, held her down on the floor and hit her back and torso before striking her face with a phone, police said. When she was able, she said she fled the apartment, police said.

When officers arrived at Rattigan's house on Beacon View Drive, he was pulling in, police said. Officers questioned him about the fight, police said.

He was charged with second-degree breach of peace, third-degree assault and first-degree unlawful restraint. He failed to post $100,000 bail and was taken to court Friday. No information regarding his court appearance was available.
