The fire began around 8:45 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, at a home on Ravenwood Road, said Norwalk Fire Deputy Chief Todd Smith.

When Norwalk firefighters arrived on the scene they found a raised, ranch house with fire billowing through the roof, the front door, and from the right side of the house, Smith said.

In addition to the roof burning over the bedrooms the fire was extending up into the hallway and into the bedrooms, he said.

Firefighters, using ground ladders made entry through the garage up the stairs to the first level and were able to perform a primary search before concerns of collapsing roof structure caused evacuation of the building to be ordered, Smith said.

The fire attack became defensive at that point from outside the structure until the fire was knocked down sufficiently for entry to be made.

Once the fire was extinguished, secondary searches were completed and the home was found to be vacant. The one resident was gone at the time, he said.

The Fire Marshal was on scene to conduct an investigation, as well as the Connecticut State Police Fire Investigation Unit.

On scene included two chiefs, 35 firefighters, a rescue company, four engine companies, two ladder companies, and mutual aid from New Canaan and Darien fire departments.

The fire investigation continues at this time.
