The plane was from a Connecticut flight school, NBC Connecticut reported. It had issued a mayday call after leaving Tweed Airport.
The person killed was identified as Pablo Campos, 31, of East Haven, according to NBC Connecticut. The unidentified injured person, a flight instructor at Connecticut Flight Academy, was in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital, NBC Connecticut said.
The crash was reported just before 10 a.m. The plane was located off airport property near Roses Farm Road in East Haven, NBC Connecticut reported. Police had to wade through two feet of water and ice to get to the plane, which was in the mud, NBC Connecticut reported.
The plane was a Piper PA 38 and crashed as it approached Runway 2 at Tweed Airport, NBC Connecticut said. The incident briefly closed the airport and canceled flights, and also closed several nearby roads while investigators responded to the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the FBI are investigating, NBC Connecticut said. Officials told NBC Connecticut that conditions were good for flying.
