Jeff Vogt and Kate Altmann live next door to the house where what police described as a "violent domestic assault" ultimately led to the fatal shooting of the unidentified man. The two said they heard the man arguing with a police officer just before the shooting, which occurred shortly after 6 a.m.
"They're just a really nice family," said Altmann. "We heard some arguing and then the shots. There was nothing before that."
The man's wife and children all suffered injuries in the incident and were taken to nearby hospitals. Lt. James Perez of the Fairfield Police Department said that they are investigating and believe the father was involved, but that they don't know for sure who injured whom.
"We've been neighbors a really long time. It has to be 10 years," Vogt said.
Altmann and Vogt said that the family has never had any incidents like this occur before. They said their kids played baseball together.
"We're totally beside ourselves," Altmann said.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident, with assistance from the Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Stamford States Attorney's Office.
