Police and fire officials have ordered a mandatory, immediate evacuation surrounding Fairfield Avenue area in Stamford due to an overturned truck hauling extremely hazardous materials.
The multiple-block area includes most of Sunnyside Avenue, Liberty Place, Taff Avenue, and Fairfield Avenue.
The hazardous material, identified as methyl methacrylate monomer that is used in the manufacture of resins and plastics, is not leaking at this point, fire officials said.
But in an effort to right the overturned truck, officials are taking extra precautions.
The truck flipped onto its side around 8:30 a.m. Monday when the driver attempted to make a U-turn, instead, the truck flipped onto its side, officials said.
The fire department is consulting with state Department Energy and Environmental Protection to determine the best way to deal with the situation.
The truck in located in a parking lot at 391 Fairfield Avenue.
Anyone in the area is asked to leave immediately.
