The sergeant asked the driver, Thomas Obst, 40, of Monroe, to perform the standard field sobriety tests, which he did not pass, police said.
During a search of the car, officers found 20 individually wrapped folds in a plastic bag under the emergency brake, police said. The substance in the folds field tested positive for heroin, police said. Officers found a total of 5.8 grams of the substance in the car, police said.
Obst was charged with a misdemeanor summons of driving under the influence and given $100 cash bond. He was also charged with possession of narcotics and posted $5,000 bond. He is due in court on both charges on March 27.
