Man Dies After Metro-North Train Knocks Him Into Water In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A man was killed after he was hit by a Metro-North train in Fairfield early Thursday and knocked into the Mill River.

The incident occurred at around 12:45 a.m. Thursday, according to a Metro-North spokesperson.

An "unauthorized person" was on the tracks about a quarter-mile away from the Fairfield station on a fixed rail bridge when he was hit by the train. The impact knocked the man into the water of the Mill River.

The man's body was later recovered by Fairfield first responders.

The train that hit him had departed Grand Central Terminal at 11:26 p.m. and was due to arrive in New Haven at 1:27 a.m. Due to the time of the incident, it did not have much of an impact on Metro-North traffic, and did not affect the morning rush-hour commute.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The identity of the man hit has not yet been determined.
