According to a police report, Jeffrey Zager, of Bridgeport, told police he hit the parked car after swerving to avoid a Nissan that was trying to pass him on the right side. The officers said Zager smelled strongly of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet when talking to them, the police report said.

The officers told Zager that the evidence did not support his story and asked him to perform the standard field sobriety tests, which he failed, police said. When officers asked whether he had been drinking, he said yes, police said.

Officers took Zager to police headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test, police said.

He was charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive in the right lane. He was released on $100 bond and given a court date of Sept. 17 at Bridgeport Superior Court.
