Man Charged With Avoiding Ticket In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – An Easton man now faces a criminal charge after attempting to avoid a ticket for talking on a cell phone in Fairfield, police said.

Robert Auer, 54, of Norton Road, Easton, was driving Monday afternoon on Bronson Road. An officer directing traffic at a utility work site reported seeing Auer drive over the speed limit when approaching the work area and stop suddenly when the officer signaled to slow down, according to the police report. The officer saw him talking on a cell phone when he stopped, police said.

The officer told Auer to pull over after the work zone, but Auer refused and drove away, according to the police report. Police then filed a warrant for his arrest for leaving the scene. He turned himself in at police headquarters after learning of the warrant.

Auer was charged with interfering with an officer, a misdemeanor. He also was issued infractions for speeding in a work zone, driving while using a handheld mobile device and disobeying an officer’s signal in a work zone. He was released on a promise to appear in court Aug. 15.
