A resident on Bridget Lane called 911 after hearing a “popping sound” and seeing black smoke coming from a nearby building, according to Assistant Chief Chris Tracy. Firefighters arrived and found that there was a fire inside a detached garage in the back yard of a Rugby Road home.

After the homeowner opened the garage’s door, fire crews were able to put out the fire before it spread outside the building. The garage had been close enough to a neighboring home that the fire could have spread just from radiant heat alone, Tracy said.

The garage was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. Incident commander Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir credited the 911 caller with helping to prevent more damage.

“Her awareness and early notification of the fire to 911 coupled with a quick fire attack from Engine One’s crew may well have saved her home from fire extension,” Kalapir said in a news release.

The Fairfield Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the cause of the fire.
