A Fairfield police officer was in the parking lot of the Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue when he witnessed the incident, police said.
Roland Olah, 36, drove into the clearly marked exit and made several jerky motions while parking, police said. He then opened the driver side door and fell out on to the ground before getting on his hands and knees, police said.
The officer approached Olah and smelled alcohol on his breath, found his speech slurred and saw he had difficulty steadying himself, police said. He was asked to perform three standard field sobriety tests but failed, police said.
During the tests, a female passenger with slurred speech began to yell at the officer, police said.
Olah was arrested and taken to the station, where a breath test revealed he was over the legal limit of intoxication, police said.
During the test, he became ill and officers contacted an ambulance and town paramedics. He was taken to St. Vincient’s Hospital in Bridgeport. He was released on a written promise to appear in court Nov. 12.
