Fairfield RTM OKs New Contracts For Police, Firefighters

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Representative Town Meeting approved new contracts for Fairfield police and firefighters on July 27, in a heated debate that, at times, focused more on timing rather than the deal’s logistics.

The board voted 31-0 with seven abstentions in favor of approving the 2013-2017 contract between the Town of Fairfield and the Fairfield Police Union.

The new deal provides a 2.49 percent wage increase each year, while contributing to health insurance premiums, pensions and retirement benefits.

"We thank all of those who came out to support our officers and those who spoke in support of them," said the Fairfield Police Union in a statement.

Detractors such as David Mackenzie (R-3) objected to the salary increase based on the unbalance rate of inflation and the emergence of other unions switching to 401(a) plans, according to a report by the Fairfield Citizen.

Many in attendance expressed their anger over the delay of the bill which is retroactive to 2013.
