Two tires were taken from each SUV over Monday and Tuesday, Fairfield police said. Toyota of Westport contacted police Thursday about the damage to the two vehicles at its Commerce Drive lot.
According to the police report, the two SUVs were damaged after the support used to keep the cars up collapsed after the tires were stolen.
On Monday, two tires on the right side of a Highlander were taken, and the car was left propped up on milk carts, which collapsed overnight, police said. The lot's gate was not locked that night, police said.
Overnight Tuesday, two rear tires were taken from a second SUV, which was left propped on car jacks, police said. Those jacks collapsed, causing damage to the car, police said. This time, the gate had been locked, but security found that a section of the wire gate had been cut open, police said.
Each tire was valued at $700. No information was available about the cost of the damage to the vehicles.
Police were investigating the incidents.
