Fairfield American won the District 2 and Division 1 championship. It was scheduled to play Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Orange against Farmington for the Section 1 championship.
Vandals spray-painted “Cheaters” in white paint on the scoreboard, dugout and press box at the field. A story at the Fairfield Citizen website estimated the damage at $10,000.
In a press briefing Wednesday, Police Chief Gary McNamara said the vandalism was reported to the police on Wednesday morning. Fairfield American practiced at the field Tuesday night until around 8:30 p.m.
“Everything is there to indicate that it’s because Fairfield American advanced in the playoffs,’’ McNamara said. “The timing is there, the word 'cheater' is there. Everything there indicates this has something to do with the American team advancing the in the playoffs. Now who did it, why they did it, is still up for grabs.”
