Fairfield Police Pursue Stolen Car That Smashed Into Post Road Hydrant

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The driver of a stolen Jeep Grand Cherokee smashed into a Post Road fire hydrant and led police on a brief pursuit before ditching the car in Bridgeport early Saturday, Fairfield police said.

Officers first spotted the Jeep traveling east on Old Post Road in Fairfield with two other vehicles also believed to be stolen from the area just after 4 a.m., police said.

An officer gave chase and the car headed for the Post Road, where it hit a fire hydrant at the traffic circle and continued onto the northbound lanes of I-95. The officer ended the pursuit there, police said.

The 2014 vehicle, valued at $40,000, was found later on South Frontage Road in Bridgeport, police said. It had been reported stolen from a Rowland Road residence.

Around 8:45 a.m., a resident of nearby Old Field Road reported a 2015 Lexus RX 350 SUV was stolen sometime overnight. The owner said the keys were in the unlocked car, valued at $50,000, police said.

Also inside: a $500 set of golf clubs, a $200 iPad and some soccer equipment.

At 9:40 a.m., a Catherine Street resident reported her 2010 Audio A4, worth about $6,000, had been stolen from her driveway overnight.

The Lexus and Audi are still missing and are believed to have been the vehicles traveling with the Jeep, police said.
