Fairfield Police Link Stolen Wallet To Attempted Purchase Of Rolex Watches

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - It took about 13 minutes for officers to link the theft of a wallet to a report of a woman attempting to use stolen credit cards to buy $27,000 in Rolex watches Thursday afternoon, Fairfield police said.

Sadie Ouellette, 36, of Las Vegas was held on $100,000 bond in Fairfield. She is also being held on a federal detainer for the U.S. Marshals.

"It was only through the great observation of the Lenox employee that we were able to unravel the whole thing," Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara said. "All things went right."

The case began when a Trumbull woman called Fairfield police at 2:30 p.m. to report that her wallet had been stolen while she was shopping at Trader Joe's on Black Rock Turnpike, police said.

When officers arrived, she was on the phone with her bank, which said her debit card had been used to withdraw $4,000 from her account, police said.

Officers were then called about a possible identity theft at Lenox Jewelers on Black Rock Turnpike at 2:43 p.m., police said.

A store employee reported that a woman wearing a wig and sunglasses came into the store and asked to purchase two Rolex watches, one for $17,000 and the other for $9,900, police said. The woman asked whether the watches could be purchased on two separate American Express cards, the employee told police.

When the employee checked the identification, she realized the woman at the counter was not the same woman on the driver's license or credit cards, police said.

The victim had been a customer with the jewelry store, said the employee, who told police that she knew the victim well enough to identify her.

When officers asked the suspect for her name, she gave them a second false name before finally identifying herself as Sadie Ouellette, 36, of Las Vegas

Ouellette told officers that she had found the credit cards on the ground outside Panera Breads, police said.

The bank teller was able to identify Ouellette as the person who withdrew the $4,000, police said.

Fairfield police charged Ouellette with fourth-degree larceny, sixth-degree larceny, criminal attempt to commit first-degree larceny, illegal use of a credit card, two counts of criminal impersonation and interfering with a police officer.

During the booking process, police found two outstanding arrest warrants for her in California, one warrant in Nevada and an extraditable warrant from the U.S. Marshals in Portland Ore., on a charge of conspiracy to distribute oxycodone.

Ouellette was held on $100,000 bond in the Fairfield charges and taken to court Friday. She was also held on a federal detainer for the U.S. Marshals.
