FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A Fairfield man was arrested on drug and DUI charges after driving recklessly on Melville Avenue and nearly hitting a cyclist, police said.
A witness called police after seeing a black BMW X5 swerve into the opposite lane for traffic on Friday, July 3, police said.
After officers stopped the car and approached the driver, James Baekeland Davis of 113 Brooklawn Parkway, they noticed that he had glassy, bloodshot eyes, police said. He also had slow, slurred speech, police said.
Davis consented to a search of the vehicle, police said. Upon searching the vehicle, officers found three controlled substances that were not prescribed to him, a vodka bottle and an upopened Bud Light, police said.
Davis said he had consumed four or five beers, police said.
Officers also found three straws with a white residue, which Davis said was used to snort a prescription drug that was prescribed to him, according to police.
Davis was arrested and charged with use and possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Davis was released on $100 bond. His court date is July 14, according to police.
