The resident called 911 at 9:34 a.m., reporting a fire in the house, a one-and-a-half story cape located at the beach in Fairfield, fire officials said. Smoke was coming from the house when firefighters arrived.
Upon making entry, Company 1 found fire in a furnace room at the center of the home, which they extinguished.
The fire had burned through the floor and extended into the crawlspace below, which Engine 4 put out from the home's exterior.
“Although the smoke detectors in the home appeared to be working, due to the closed furnace room it was the odor of smoke that alerted the resident before the detectors were activated,” said Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola. “Her early call to 911 and evacuation along with her dog kept this fire from being far more serious, allowing us to achieve a quick knockdown of the fire with a minimum of fire damage.”
Rescue 1 and Ladder 2 personnel took care of salvage and overhaul at the scene, while crews spread tarps to protect the property and checked for fire extension in the attic and walls.
The scene was cleared at 10 a.m. by Incident Commander Gomola and turned over to Fire Marshal William Kessler.
Representatives of the Fire Marshal’s Office were investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
Engines 1, 2, 4 and 5, Rescue 1, Ladder 2 and Car 3 responded, with Engine 1 first on the scene at 9:41 a.m. Engine 3 was added to the assignment, and Cars 1, 2, 4 and 5 also responded.
