The Shepherd-Bassett hound mix dog, named Shadow, had entered a drain outflow pipe by the soccer fields and got stuck in 30 feet inside the catch basin.
When fire arrived on scene they found that the pipe into the catch basin was 22 inches in diameter and reduced the further in you went. The Fire Department contacted the Department of Public Works to help in the rescue of the dog.
A first rescue attempt was unsuccessful as the pipe became too narrow for the person to continue in, and a backhoe was requested.
Before the backhoe arrived, firefighters began to dig in the area before reaching a solid concrete top to the catch basin. Once it was fully exposed, DPW used the backhoe to remove the top allowing a firefighter to enter the 5-foot deep catch basin and bring the dog out.
After the dog was turned over to Fairfield Animal control, DPW replaced the top and the dirt.
