Fairfield Fire Department Battles Two Blazes In One Day

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - All on-duty firefighters from the Fairfield Fire Department were called to respond to two fires Monday, both on the Post Road.

The department responded to a morning fire at 911 Post Road after the occupants of the office called to report smelling smoke in the building shortly after 8:15 a.m., Assistant Fire Chief Schuyler Sherwood said.

While investigating the source of the smoke, firefighters determined there was an active fire above the ceiling in Advantage Staffing. The building and adjacent stores were evacuated and firefighters were able to get the fire under control and extinguished by 9:05 a.m.

No reported injuries, however, the business sustained extensive fire damage to a bathroom as well as water and smoke damage.

At 12:40 p.m., the department was again called into action with reports of a fire in the shopping center at 1580 Post Road. After investigating, firefighters found that the smoke was coming from the outside wall of a dance studio.

The surrounding stores were evacuated and mutual aid was called from the Fire Departments in Westport and Bridgeport, Sherwood said.

"It was difficult to gain access to the fire," Sherwood said. It was an exterior fire that got into the walls of the building, he said.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a leg injury, but no one else was injured.

The Fire Marshal was investigating the cause of both fires.
