Ex-Fairfield Housing Official Pleads Guilty To Embezzlement

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Ridgefield woman pleaded guilty to embezzling $30,000 from the Fairfield Housing Authority, Acting U.S. Attorney Deirdre Daly said in a press release Wednesday.

Elizabeth Jo Gutierrez, 47, was the housing authority’s executive director from July 2010 to December 2011. During her tenure she issued two checks, each worth $15,000, to herself from the agency’s bank account, according to the release.

The quasi-public agency is not managed by Fairfield’s municipal government but distributes federal funding via programs offered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Gutierrez pleaded guilty to one count of theft concerning programs receiving federal funds Wednesday. She faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Her sentencing has been scheduled for Aug. 27.
