FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A couple from Maine was busted with 84 bags of heroin Tuesday afternoon after a traffic stop on the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield, state police said.
Connecticut State Police from Troop G in Bridgeport made the arrest with assistance from a Wilton police officer and K9 officer, State Police said.
State Police stopped a motor vehicle for following too close at 4:29 p.m. just north of Exit 44 in Fairfield on the parkway, said police. During the stop, a used baggy of heroin was seen in plain view inside the car, said police. A search of the vehicle turned up 80 bags of heroin, a small amount of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, according to state police.
The State Police suspected there were possibly narcotics inside the car and as a trooper removed a passenger, Wilton K9 Baso saw a small fold of heroin on the floor in plain view, according to a report on the WIlton CT Police K9 Facebook page. Baso searched the vehicle and alerted the officers to a closed compartment under the radio, an area next to that compartment, and also a dirty laundry bin in the rear passenger compartment, Wilton Police said. Drugs were found in three places in the vehicle, according to Wilton Police.
The total seized was 84 bags of heroin, 0.7 gram of powdered heroin, 1.9 gram of marijuana and 0.6 gram of hashish, according to state police.
Riley Raenae Cannell, 22, of Veazie, Maine, was charged with Illegal possession of unstamped drugs, conspiracy to commit/possess with intent to sell/dispense, illegal possession of narcotics, conspiracy to commit/illegal possession of narcotics and possession of a controlled substance greater than one-half ounce cannabis.
Anthony J. Mclaughlin, 32, of Veazie, was charged with failure to drive at a reasonable distance, conspiracy to commit illegal sale of controlled substance, conspiracy to commit illegal possession of narcotics and conspiracy to commit/possess controlled substance of greater than a half- ounce of cannabis.
Each suspect was held on $15,000 bond for a Wednesday morning arraignment in Bridgeport.
