FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A Trumbull man faces drunken driving charges and his 20-year-old passenger will likely face drug charges in a Chambers Street fender bender Thursday, Fairfield Police said.

Police said Uran Berisha, 23, of Intervale Road, was driving east on Kings Highway East in Fairfield around 8:30 p.m., when he took a wide right turn, hitting two cars in the lefthand turn lane on Chambers Street.

A witness told police on the scene that they saw a man who was with Berisha leave a green backpack behind the ice machine outside the Cumberland Farms at the corner. Police found the bag, containing 1.86 grams of field-tested cocaine, a scale and a grinder, but the man who hid it had left the scene, police said.

Officers reviewed surveillance footage from Cumberland Farms and saw the man in question, later identified as a 20-year-old Trumbull man who is a friend of Berisha’s, police said.

In the video, the man is seen holding the backpack and pacing back and forth before stepping out of the camera’s range and coming back without the backpack, police said.

Berisha told police the second man was with him during the accident, but said he had no knowledge of any contraband in the car, police said.

While officers were processing Berisha, the second man contacted him by phone, ending all contact when he realized where Berisha was, police said.

Fairfield police contacted Trumbull police, who sent over a photo of the second man, who is known to them through domestic violence, assault, narcotics and medical calls.

Berisha was charged with driving while under the influence and failure to drive right. He was released on a promise to appear in court on April 22.

No one was injured in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
