The driver told emergency personnel he noticed smoke and flames inside the car while he was driving on I-95 shortly after 5 a.m. He pulled off the exit ramp and into the Cumberland Farms parking lot across the street.
A Cumberland Farms employee called 911 and activated the automatic extinguishing system, but it did not put out the blaze, fire officials said.
When firefighters arrived, the car was heavily involved about 50 feet from the gas pumps.
Fairfield Fire engines 1, 2, 3 and 4, rescue 1, ladder 2 and car 3 all responded to the scene. They were able to keep the fire from extending to the gas pumps and extinguish the blaze.
“The outcome of this incident would have been much worse if the car was closer to the pumps and was not extinguished as rapidly as it was,” said Assistant Fire Chief Schuyler Sherwood.
