The pursuit began just after midnight Tuesday when Fairfield police received a call about three or four people in a white Lexus at Southport Ridge who were checking car door handles parked in the area to see if they were locked, said Lt. Robert Kalamaras.

Responding officers couldn't find the car, put the dispatcher put out a call for other agencies to be on the lookout and a short time later the car was spotted in Westport and when the car refused to stop, a chase was underway, Kalamaras said.

During the pursuit, the Lexus crashed near exit 16 in Norwalk, where police found the car had been stolen from Trumbull, police said.

While the pursuit was taking place, Fairfield police found that at least five vehicles had been entered in their jurisdiction with cash and other items taken, Kalamaras said.

Norwalk police found four people inside the stolen car including a 17-year-old from Stratford who was driving, a 16-year-old from Bridgeport, and two adults, Maya Jeter, 19, of Bridgeport and Christopher Mulkern, 18, of Stratford, he added.

All were turned over to Fairfield police who charged them with numerous counts of larceny, burglary, and conspiracy to commit larceny and burglary, Kalamaras said.

The driver was turned over to his mother and the 16-year-old to her parents. Mulkern and Jeter were released and are scheduled to appear in court on April 16.
